Ask Question

Will the dust extractors CT26 and CT36 pick up debris like small nails, wire insulation, etc. similar to a shop vac without damaging the machine?

The CT26 or CT36 will pick up small nails and construction debris, no problem.  As the first stage filter element in our dust extraction system is the filter bag, those items are contained, and will not harm the system.

Is it okay to use the CT series dust extractors for plaster/gyprock dust?

Yes, works great. You will lose some capacity as the fine dust will clog the pores of the dust bag, but it will not harm the machine as long as you change filter bags when needed. With the CT22/33/44/55 be sure to pull the green handle on the back of the unit which scrubs the HEPA filter regularly.

Are the solid Beech Dominos suitable for exterior use? Are there exterior dominos?

We recommend when using the solid beech Domino loose tenons for exterior applications that you use a two-part epoxy like West System or System Three, being careful to coat all surfaces in order to help minimize the impact of moisture intrusion.
Domino Sipo hardwood tenons are also available, and are great for exterior applications like furniture, shutters, gates, decks, trim, even boat building.
Sipo is a tropical hardwood similar to mahogany and is significantly more resistant to moisture, decay, fungi and termites.
Sipo tenons are legally imported from cultivated plantations.

Can I use a tool rated at more than 2400W with my Festool dust extractor?

A tool rated at 15 amps does not necessarily draw 15 amps.
This is particularly true of Festools with their soft start feature.
Using a higher amp tool with your dust extractor will normally not damage your tool or dust extractor, but on an older house you may trip 15 amp breaker. Running two sanders with our dust extractor will normally not trip a breaker.

What are Domino tenons made of?

Domino tenons are made out of solid Beech, a very dense, strong hardwood.
They have tiny glue pockets embossed on the face to accommodate glue and ridges along the edges for a perfect fit.
Domino Sipo hardwood tenons are currently available, and are great for exterior applications like furniture, shutters, gates, decks, trim, even boat building.
Sipo is a tropical hardwood similar to mahogany and is significantly more resistant to moisture, decay, fungi and termites.

Will the Domino tenons swell in humid conditions? How do I best protect Domino tenons against swelling?

Domino tenons are made from solid beech wood, not compressed beech shavings like a biscuit joint, so they are far less susceptible to swelling from humidity.
Moreover, Domino tenons are treated to prevent swelling.

Nevertheless, if swelling does occur, the Domino tenon

What's the fastest way to apply glue to the mortise and Domino tenon?

As you are already saving considerable time using the Domino joining over traditional methods, we suggest that you take care when gluing up to ensure a good, solid joint.

Simply squirt glue in the mortise and coat the sides with either a q-tip or brush.
Some prefer using a disposable flux or acid brush for this.
Brush glue across the face of the Domino tenon and along the edge as well.
The patented glue pockets on the face of the Domino tenon ensure good adhesion.
Be generous with the glue, you don

What are Domino Sipo hardwood tenons made of?

Sipo is a tropical hardwood similar to mahogany and is significantly more resistant to moisture, decay, fungi and termites.
Sipo tenons are legally imported from cultivated plantations.

Domino Sipo hardwood tenons are excellent for exterior applications like furniture, shutters, gates, decks, trim, even boat building.

Are the bags for the CT26 and CT36 dust extractor interchangeable?

Both bags have the same mounting flange. In an emergency the smaller CT26 bag can be used in the CT36 if you place something underneath it to support it. The larger CT36 bag will fit in the CT26 as well.

Which size Domino tenon should I use for which thickness of material?

Generally, the Domino thickness should be one third the thickness of the work piece. When joining

How do you glue the Domino tenons?

For best results, squeeze yellow glue, polyurethane or epoxy into the mortise and use a brush or q-tip to swab the sides.
Lightly brush each face and along the edge of the Domino tenon and insert it.
Brush glue along the face of your joint, clamp and allow to set.

Why is the HEPA dust extractor not suitable for 'hazardous dust'?

Classified among hazardous dusts are explosive materials.
Festool dust extractors are not intended for use with explosive materials, or materials that pose a potential fire hazard.
Most people are not aware that aluminium dust is highly explosive.
We do not recommend sanding aluminium with our sanders and dust extractors.

Using a dust extractor with a HEPA filter does not eliminate exposure to hazardous dust, nor does Festool make that guarantee.

Can the Domino cutters be resharpened?

Domino cutters can be resharpened as many as 3 times.
After 3 sharpenings they become too short to mortise the necessary depth.
Domino cutters will bore between 4,000 and 15,000 mortises before they require sharpening.
On average, 4,000 mortises into end grain on hardwood, and 15,000 mortises into side grain on soft wood.
