Overview: James Krenov is world renown and highly respected woodworker who's style of furniture is beautiful and elegant.

This project course is inspired by his Krenov's body of work, and aims at helping students come up with their own inspirational designs whilst reflecting on Krenov's own. Here is a link to the James Krenov web site.

Although this course draws from the books and imagery of James Krenov's, the course does not seek to have students copy one of Krenov's pieces outright, but be inspired to compose a unique piece of their own.

Ultimately, the objective of this course is to give students the experience and confidence to go back to their own workshop and let their own inspiration spring forward in their future woodworking projects.

Building an elegant cabinet using a variety of tools and techniques including:

• Preparing timber for joinery.
• Making panels and tops.
• Making doors and draws.
• Making tapered and sculptured legs.
• Clamping and gluing techniques.
• Domino joints.
• Through domino joins or dovetail joints.
• Planing, scraping and sanding to pre-finishing level of quality.
• Using the following tools: Table saw, band-saw, circular saw, mitre saw, router, router table, hand planes, power planes, thicknesser and planer, variety of sanders, panel clamps, squares and marking tools, and more.

Finished Project: The finished cabinet can be similar to that below built by instructor Terry Fogarty. But variation in design is encouraged, and your own unique design features can be incorporated.

You will leave the course with an assembled Krenov inspired cabinet. High quality and uniquely designed cabinets sell for at least $2,000 and sometimes a lot more. Finishing the cabinet is not included because this is the last and most time consuming activity best done back at your own workshop. But we will demonstrate the techniques and discuss the best finishing products for you to use.

Included: The base course costs includes the following:

• Instruction by Terry Fogarty.
• Use of all power and hand tools at the Ideal Tools Festool Workshop.
• All consumables including dominos, glue, abrasives, etc. Please note: Finishing products not included as this is not in scope.

Timber: You will need to select and order your preferred species of timber for the project. We will arrange this for you and have the timber delivered to our workshop in suitable/quantities sizes prior to you beginning your first session.

Target Audience: This course is designed to build up your skills in furniture making and you finish the course with a completed piece of furniture. Perfect for intermediate woodworkers who can already complete basic furniture projects, but wish to challenge themselves and do something different and inspiring.

Things to bring: Ensure you are wearing clothing suitable to working in a timber workshop environment. Personal protection equipment (ear-muffs, glasses) is available, but you may wish to bring your own.

Class size: Small - a maximum of 6 participants. Each participant has the use of their own workbench and set of hand-tools, with communal assembly spaces, communal powered tools and machinery, and additional communal hand tools.
